[printfriendly]This companion CD (and downloadable MP3 tracks) to the book Taoist Chanting and Recitation by Stuart Alve Olson presents the author’s narration and translation of Lao Zi’s Tao De Jing (Book on Tao and Virtue), which appears in the Contemplation Meditation section of Taoist Chanting and Recitation.
As explained in the introduction to Taoist Chanting and Recitation:
Listening to scriptures in Taoism goes far back into history as many temples and monasteries would have a cantor read certain scriptures during meal times and some meditation periods. Aside from the obvious contemplative benefits, it is also an amazing method of acquiring the wisdom of Taoist philosophy without the anxiety of study. I’ve come to understand this method as a fusing of practice and theory into one, and it actually helped me understand the Taoist ideal of wei wu wei, best translated as “active non-calculating.” Listening to a scripture is active, but the mental response is non-active
Music by Deni Gendron, a longtime student of Stuart’s. The MP3 tracks comprise the Book of Tao (chapters 1 thru 37 of the Tao De Jing) and the Book of Virtue (chapters 38 thru 81). Each can be used in separate meditation sessions that run about 40 minutes.
